About Founder Institute
What you get
Founder Institute (FI) is a part-time pre-accelerator for founders at the very earliest stage, including people with only an idea. Its Agentic Program is 10 sessions plus a Demo Day, focused on building an MVP and getting ready to raise. It runs in 200+ cities and online. FI also runs short bootcamps of a few weeks. There is no cash investment.
Who qualifies
Idea-stage founders, career changers and professionals who want to start a company. Apply to your nearest chapter or an online cohort; the Silicon Valley chapter lists Fall 2026 applications as open.
Good to know
- Fee: you pay an entrance fee that "varies by city and deadline"; your chapter page shows the amount. It is fully refundable before kickoff and 75% refundable before Session 3. Teams of two to three pay 1.5 times the fee.
- Equity: about two-thirds of the way through you pledge 2.5% of future equity to FI's Equity Collective as a warrant (0.5% mentors, 1% local leaders, 1% FI). It only activates at an outside equity round of $100,000 or more ($25,000 if you join a qualifying programme such as Y Combinator), has no board seat or voting rights, and dissolves if the company fails. Bootcamps take no equity.
- Agreements are public at fi.co/agreements.
Verdict
A structured way to go from idea to MVP with deadlines and mentors, wherever you live. You pay twice (fee and warrant) and get no funding, so it suits first-time founders more than teams already shipping.
