Good to know

  • PayPal is not a merchant of record; you remain responsible for sales tax and VAT.
  • Many buyers trust the PayPal button, which can lift conversion for consumer products, but fees are higher than Stripe's base card rate.
  • Funds can be held or reserved after reviews; keep a second payment option.
  • Pay Later lets buyers split payments while you are paid upfront, at the higher 4.99% plus $0.49 rate.
  • Invoices paid by card, Apple Pay or other third-party wallets cost 2.99% plus $0.49.
  • Keep enough balance or a backup processor in case PayPal places a hold on funds during a review.
  • Sending or receiving money for goods and services costs 2.99% with no fixed fee listed.

Verdict

Add PayPal next to your main processor if your buyers expect it, especially for consumer and international sales. It is rarely the best sole payment stack for a SaaS startup.
