How to build a landing page

Why this step matters

A landing page is where every launch post, email, ad and search result points. Before you have a product it lets you test demand with a waitlist; after you have one, it turns visitors into users. A good landing page answers four questions within a few seconds: what is this, who is it for, why should I believe it, and what do I do next? Most early pages fail on the first question because the founders describe features instead of outcomes.

Treat the page as a living experiment rather than a finished brochure. Every visitor who leaves without signing up is telling you something about the headline, the proof or the offer. The faster you can edit and republish the page yourself, without waiting for a developer or designer, the faster you learn what makes your audience act.

How to do it

  1. Write the copy first. Draft the headline (the outcome you deliver), a subheading (who it is for and how it

works in one sentence), three benefit blocks, a short "how it works" in three steps, an FAQ and one call to action. Use the words your interviewees used to describe their problem. AI writing tools can produce variations; you choose and edit.

  1. Pick one call to action. "Join the waitlist", "Start free" or "Book a demo", not all three. Repeat the same

button at the top and bottom of the page.

  1. Show the product. Use a real screenshot, a short looping clip or an interactive demo. If the product does not

exist yet, a clear mock-up is fine, labelled honestly as a preview.

  1. Add proof you actually have. Early user quotes (with permission), the number of people on the waitlist, a

founder story, or relevant experience. Never invent testimonials, customer logos or review scores; it is misleading and, in many countries, against consumer protection law.

  1. Choose how to build it. Website builders and landing page tools are fastest for non-developers. If you already

have a web app, a page inside your framework keeps everything in one place. AI app builders can generate a first draft from your copy, which you then refine.

  1. Connect the form. Send sign-ups to an email marketing tool or CRM, and send a confirmation email immediately so

people remember why they signed up. In the EU and UK, be clear about what they are signing up for and get consent for marketing emails.

  1. Cover the basics. Your own domain over HTTPS, a favicon and social sharing image, a page title and meta

description, a privacy policy, a contact address and fast loading on mobile (compress images, avoid heavy scripts).

  1. Install analytics. Track visits, sources and conversion to sign-up. Use UTM tags on every link you share.
  2. Iterate weekly. Change one thing at a time, such as the headline, and compare sign-up rates over a week or two

with enough traffic to see a difference.

What it costs and how long it takes

With a website builder on a free or entry plan and a domain, you can launch for $0-30 a month. A developer can build a static page and host it free on many platforms. Expect two to five days: most of it writing and rewriting the copy, very little of it on design.

Free credits, perks and services that help

Compare website builders and landing page tools on website builders, and domains and hosting on hosting and domains. Email marketing, form and CRM tools often appear in startup perk bundles in the perks directory. If you host the page yourself, cloud credits can cover it for a long time.

Common mistakes

  • Clever but vague headlines. If a stranger cannot say what you do after five seconds, rewrite it.
  • Feature lists without outcomes. Customers buy results, not checkboxes.
  • Too many choices. Several buttons and a big menu split attention and lower sign-ups.
  • Fake social proof. Invented quotes or logos destroy trust when discovered and can be illegal.
  • Ignoring mobile. Much early traffic from social posts arrives on phones.
  • No follow-up. Collecting emails and never writing to them wastes the most interested people you have.
